The Alberta Energy Corridor is well served by medical and health facilities. Hospitals, health units and community health services are available, as well as continuing care facilities, and living well programs and resources. Several doctors have their medical practices in communities throughout the region.

Athabasca Continuing Care

The Athabasca Healthcare Centre also has a 23-bed continuing care wing, and which employs a team of health professionals and support staff in the following departments: Administration, Admitting, Food Services, Health Records, Housekeeping, Laundry, Maintenance, Nursing, Nutrition Services, and Rehabilitation Services.
Nursing services are provided on a 24-hour basis under the supervision of a registered nurse. Nursing services is a partnership between the nurses, the personal care aides, the doctor, the resident and the family, in meeting the holistic needs of the residents. The Wabasca/Desmarais Healthcare Centre is a-10 bed accredited facility serving the areas of Wabasca, Desmarais, Sandy Lake, Chipewyan Lake and Bigstone Cree Nation since it opened its doors in 1988. Emergency / Protective Services

The Alberta Energy Corridor is well served with emergency and protective services throughout the entire region. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Detachments are located in Athabasca, Boyle and Wabasca. All Detachments have full complements of officers, which are further complimented by RCMP Detachments in other communities in this northeast region of Alberta. As well, the Provincial Sheriff Detachment for the north-central half of Alberta is headquartered in Boyle. The Sheriff Detachment is tasked with highway patrol, with its members on regular, daily patrol of Highway 63 – major access route to Fort McMurray and a highly travelled highway.

Also centred in both Boyle and Athabasca and serving the Alberta Energy Corridor region is Ambulance / Emergency Medical Technologists (EMTs). Ambulance / EMT services are available in Wabasca and Wandering River.

Fire Departments serve all communities in the region: Athabasca, Boyle, Grassland, Wabasca and Wandering River. Children’s Services and Crisis Lines and Counselling are also available.
